He obtained his bachelor degree at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) México, specialized studies in volcanology at the University of Florence, Italy, and his PhD at SUNY at Buffalo, USA, in 1994. He joined the Institute of Geophysics of UNAM in 1994.
He studies the eruptive history of volcanoes through their stratigraphy and the construction of volcanic hazard maps. He has recently focused these studies to understand the evolution of geothermal zones in Mexico.
He has 164 publications including 123 research articles (97 indexed), two volcanic hazard maps, two books, one monograph, 9 field trip guides, 9 technical communications, two informative posters, and 13 divulgation articles. These publications have been cited 2380 times (H = 28).
He has been distinguished with the Lázaro Cárdenas medal of the IPN (1985); the "Reginald H. Pegrum" award for research excellence of SUNY at Buffalo (1994); the DUNJA-UNAM award for young scientists of the Natural Sciences Research area (2002), and the Science Award of the State of Michoacán 2016.
He has taught 40 courses at UNAM and the Universdiad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. He has advised 38 theses (9 PhD, 16 M.C., and 13 bachelor's).
